Recognising an emergency

When to call us — immediately

If you are in any doubt, call us. It is always better to call and be reassured than to wait.

🔴 Call immediately — these are emergencies

Difficulty breathing, choking or turning blue

Collapse, inability to stand or sudden weakness

Suspected poisoning or eating something toxic

Seizure or convulsions

Severe trauma — road accident, fall, bite wound

Uncontrolled or severe bleeding

Bloated, distended abdomen with distress (GDV in dogs)

Straining to urinate with no output — especially cats (blocked bladder)

Eye injury or sudden change in vision

Loss of consciousness

Vomiting or diarrhoea more than once or twice

Not eating for more than 24 hours

Limping or sudden change in mobility

Significant change in behaviour or energy

Drinking or urinating much more or less than usual

What should I do if my pet has an emergency?

Who looks after my pet out of hours?

Out-of-hours care for TWC patients is provided by ICR Loanhead. When you call our usual number outside opening hours, your call is automatically forwarded — you never need to look up a different number or register anywhere new.

What counts as an emergency?

Call immediately for difficulty breathing or choking, collapse or inability to stand, suspected poisoning, seizures, severe trauma such as a road accident or bite wound, or uncontrolled bleeding. If your pet just seems not quite right, call us the same day — we would always rather take a call and tell you everything is fine than have you wait when it is not.

Is out-of-hours care charged differently?

Yes — out-of-hours services are charged separately by ICR Loanhead as the provider of that care. For in-hours emergencies you are treated by our own team at Newcraighall, including emergency stabilisation at the practice.
