Why it matters

Nutrition is
clinical medicine

Nutrition is one of the most powerful tools available in veterinary care — and one of the most frequently left to chance. The right diet can slow the progression of chronic disease, support recovery from illness, maintain a healthy weight, and improve quality of life at every stage.

Raw and home-cooked recipe formulation

The majority of nutrition consultations at TWC involve formulating balanced raw or home-cooked recipes. Miriam works to FEDIAF nutritional standards — the European framework for complete and balanced pet nutrition — ensuring every recipe meets your pet's full nutritional requirements, not just a best guess.

Nutrition is a particular area of clinical interest for Miriam. She takes an evidence-based, diet-agnostic approach — whether your pet eats commercial dry food, wet food, raw, home-cooked, or a combination, she'll work with what suits you and your pet rather than prescribing a one-size-fits-all solution.

A nutrition consultation at TWC is not a five-minute chat. It's an in-depth review of your pet's current diet, health status, and goals — with a written plan sent afterwards so you have something concrete to follow.

Weight management
Obesity is one of the most common — and most impactful — health problems in dogs and cats. We'll create a realistic, sustainable weight loss or maintenance plan tailored to your pet.
Chronic disease support
Diet plays a significant role in managing kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, arthritis, and skin conditions. Nutritional support is an important part of the treatment plan for many chronic conditions.
Life stage nutrition
Nutritional needs change throughout life — puppies and kittens, adults, and seniors all have different requirements. We'll make sure the diet evolves with your pet.

Whatever your pet
currently eats

Miriam takes a diet-agnostic approach. She'll give you honest, evidence-informed advice on your pet's current diet — and if it's working well, she'll say so.

Commercial dry food (kibble)
The most widely fed diet type. We'll review the quality of what you're feeding, check portion sizes, and advise on whether it's meeting your pet's needs.
Commercial wet food
Higher moisture content, often more palatable. We'll review nutritional completeness and whether it's appropriate for your pet's stage and health status.
Raw & BARF
Raw feeding is increasingly popular. We'll review your current raw diet for nutritional balance and advise you of commercial and DIY options.
Home-cooked
Home-cooked diets are often nutritionally incomplete without careful formulation. Miriam can help you ensure a home-cooked diet meets your pet's needs — with supplements where necessary.
Mixed / combination
Many pets eat a combination of diet types. We'll look at the overall picture and advise on whether it's balanced and appropriate.
Therapeutic / prescription diets
If your pet is already on a therapeutic diet for a health condition, we'll review whether it's the right choice and whether it's being fed correctly alongside other treatments.
The consultation

What a nutrition
consultation involves

1
Full diet history
Miriam will go through everything your pet currently eats — main meals, treats, supplements, and anything else they receive. Please note any food brands and products in advance if you can.
2
Health assessment
Diet is reviewed in the context of your pet's current health — their weight, body condition score, any ongoing conditions, medications, life stage, and digestive health. A clinical examination will take place as part of the appointment.
3
Honest, practical advice
Miriam will give you an honest assessment of your pet's current diet, what's working, and what could be improved. She'll recommend changes that are realistic for you and your household — not an idealised plan you won't be able to follow.
4
Written plan
After the consultation, you'll receive a written plan summarising the recommendations — specific foods, portion sizes, supplements if appropriate, and any monitoring needed. This is included in the £80 consultation fee.
The written plan is sent after the appointment. It gives you something concrete to follow and refer back to.
