Western veterinary herbal medicine is the use of plant-derived medicines — prescribed and dosed based on body weight — to support or treat health conditions in animals. It is practised by qualified veterinary surgeons and sits within a regulatory framework.

At TWC, herbal prescribing is grounded in evidence, informed by current research, and always integrated with conventional care. Miriam prescribes western veterinary herbal medicine regularly as part of her clinical practice.

Preparations are usually prescribed as liquid tinctures — concentrated plant extracts that can be added to food or administered directly. Formulations are tailored to the individual patient.

Western veterinary herbal medicine at TWC is prescribed by Dr Miriam Main BVM&S MRCVS — not supplied as a supplement or over-the-counter remedy. Prescribing follows a clinical assessment, and dosing is monitored and adjusted as needed.
Not traditional Chinese medicine
Western veterinary herbal medicine draws on European and global botanical traditions interpreted through a modern evidence-based lens. It is not traditional Chinese herbal medicine, and does not use Chinese diagnostic frameworks.
Regulated & safe
Veterinary herbal prescribing falls within the RCVS Code of Professional Conduct. Miriam selects preparations with established safety profiles and monitors patients carefully, particularly alongside conventional medication.
Part of an integrated plan
Herbal medicine is rarely the only treatment. It works best as part of a multimodal approach — alongside pharmaceutical care, nutrition, and physical therapies where relevant.

Clinical assessment
Herbal prescribing begins with a thorough clinical consultation. Miriam will review your pet's history, current medications, diet, and overall health before making any prescribing decisions. This is usually part of an integrated care consultation.

Tailored formulation
Where herbal medicine is appropriate, Miriam selects a formulation suited to your pet's specific condition and circumstances. Preparations are usually prescribed as liquid tinctures — easy to add to food or administer directly. Dose is calculated by weight and adjusted as needed.

Monitoring & review
Herbal prescribing is always reviewed at follow-up appointments. Miriam assesses response, adjusts dose if needed, and ensures there are no interactions with other medications. We will never leave you managing a prescription without support.
If your pet is already on conventional medication, please mention this at consultation — some herbal preparations interact with pharmaceutical drugs and Miriam will account for this in her prescribing.
